Manitowoc, WI – May 8, 2009 – Russ Wetenkamp of Manitowoc put his ride in high gear and jumped out to the lead of the 30 lap Sprint Car A-Main at the Manitowoc County Expo Speedway. The field came to a stop for the car of Mukwonago’s Mark Wernes Jr. flipping in turn two and collecting the cars of Tony Wondra, Campbellsport, and Jeff Wilke of Genoa, IL. Wetenkamp paced the pack at the drop of the green and encountered lap traffic on lap 11. On lap 12, Plymouth’s Ben Schmidt took control of the race. Paul Pokorski of West Bend started 16th and weaved his way through traffic to chase down Schmidt and second place Wayne Modjeski of Oak Creek. Modjeski and Pokorski ran out of laps and Schmidt led the way to the checkered followed by Modjeski, Pokorski, Plymouth’s TJ Luedke, and Wetenkamp.

Thanks to an anonymous donor, the Late Models ran twin 25 lap features, with the ultimate winner determined by the sum of their finish in both races. Ties were broken based on finishing spot in the first race.

The first 25 lap feature saw Kaukauna’s Pete Parker take the lead from the pole. Abrams Ron Berna crossed the line first on lap 5 to take the lead over. Berna would take the checkered flag followed by Parker, Russ Scheffler and Rick Scheffler both of Waukesha, and Cleveland’s Jim Schmidt.

All cars finishing on the lead lap of the first 25 lap feature were inverted for the start of the second 25 lap feature. Outside pole sitter, Scott Sohrweide of Chilton took the lead from the drop of the green flag. A caution on lap 4 for three cars getting together on the backstretch slowed the field down. On the restart, Glenbeulah’s Tim Buhler took over the lead and stayed out front until the checkers flew. Buhler was chased to the line by Rick Scheffler and Russ Scheffler, Shawano’s Tom Naeyaert, and Parker.

The combined finish of the two 25 lap features found Russ Scheffler taking home the increased purse followed by Rick Scheffler, Parker, Berna, and Buhler.

Elkhart Lake’s Brad Lubach took control of the 20 lap Grand National feature from the start. By lap 7, eighth place starter Brian Gilles of Plymouth worked his way to second and found himself chasing down Lubach for the lead. On lap 11, Gilles reeled in Lubach and took the reigns over. Gilles continued to pace the pack and took home the checkered flag. Gilles was chased to the line by Lubach, Sheboygan’s Jason Winkler, Mike Bastian of Manitowoc, and Howards Grove’s Bob Peter.

Joshua Schroeder of Manitowoc jumped out to the lead in the 15 lap Hobby Stock feature. Sheboygan’s Jeff Leonhard was in pursuit and passed Schroeder for the lead on lap 3 but his reign was short lived as Brad Ruh of Elkhart Lake passed him on lap 6. Ruh paced the field to the checkers followed by Leonhard, Newton’s Mike Kaufmann, Adam Krepline of Manitowoc, and Whitelaw’s Kevin Damrow.

The twin 25 lap Late Model feature was run because we are celebrating EWSC's 50th season of racing. The anonymous fan donated money to make it $1,000 to win.
