SCHULER SHINES IN THE BIG 8 SERIES PREVIEW FEATURE AT JEFFERSON

By: Kevin Ramsell
JEFFERSON, WI (Friday, September 18, 2009) - Jason Schuler led wire-to-wire to win the 35-lap Preview Feature for the BRP Big 8 Series presented by Gandrud Chevrolet on the first night of the two-day Wisconsin State Championships presented by Miller Brewing Company at Jefferson Speedway in Jefferson, WI. The field consisted of the drivers who have already qualified for tomorrow night’s Twin 65’s main event.

Gregg,
Can you tell us why the preview feature line up was the way it was? The fastest 6 starting up front? What was that about?

That was the number drawn out of the bag, smallest invert there could have been, sometimes it works out that way. The Dice roll on the track was for tonight's first feature.

Hmmmm, As close as qualifying is at that event straight up should be the way to go for the preview feature.

Would hafta agree with Gus, even though it wouldn't have helped us, it seems the invert at Jefferson, where there is passing, would not be needed.

What passing? I seen three late model features won easily from the front row outside!

That is why you don't want your faster cars up front!

Yes Jon, 3 features won from the preferred starting spot.
BUT, let's look at some of the facts in those 3 races.

Preview feature: Jason Schuler wins.
Jason Schuler + Pathfinder Chassis + Jefferson Speedway + front row starting spot + PREVIEW feature = Jason Schuler wins. Even if anybody had anything for Jason, they weren't going to press the issue in Friday nights preview feature when the points and money are all dished out on Saturday.

First 65 lapper: Jarlsberg wins.
Jarlsberg has always been tough at Jefferson and he just lucked out with his starting spot. There was lots of passing done by Haan, Kenseth, Dobratz and everyone else who passed Wilberg and Erickson on their way to the trunk.

Second 65 lapper: Erickson wins. He must have really gotten his **** together after the first race, because he really looked like a turd in the first one but is usually the fastest thing at Jefferson on a weekly basis.
Also lots of passing in this race as Jarlsberg, Dobratz and Kenseth charged toward the front while Wilberg fell from the front row toward the back again.

While some may look at it as 3 wins from the front row, I say "did you see from second on back through the field?" Awesome racing!

And by the way, when was the last time Jason Schuler was in victory lane?

Have to agree with you Jim. While the wins came from up front, the racing from 15th - 2nd was awesome!

One thing great about the Big 8 series is the level of competition. I saw some REALLY OUTSTANDING cars getting passed.

How many times has Erickson been passed this year? Maybe...never.

The racing was great!!!

The three features won from the front row are indicative of why inverts are a joke at tracks with two grooves. Jason S. was top six in time, and was a better car than that, starting with Thurs practice.
Kyle J and Ross were both faster than the 94 and 99 on Friday, but Doug and Jason battled side by side for the entire race.

Saturdays Features shine a bigger glare on the invert system. In the first one, the 87 started on the pole, thanks to the dice roll. Kyle J has had a fast car ALL year at Jefferson, particularly the last three weeks of the season.
The second one, after some major adjustments, our "turd" (understatement of the decade) finally ran somewhat in the ballpark of what we're used to.

Last year was the same thing, we broke a trailing arm bracket in qualifying, and ended up tenth. After going back to the shop and fixing the bracket, the car was fast again.
Thanks to the invert, Jason started on the front row and won the first feature.
So as far as Im concerned, inverts at places with two grooves are a joke. Most of the time, the event winner is based on a dice roll, and I'd rather see it done by the fast guys starting in the trunk.

I thought the racing was great on saturday; Jefferson is one of the more challenging tracks to pass at because it has 2 grooves, but it makes it fun and the better handling cars seem to be able to pass. I wouldn't have minded starting straight up though!
